Blog Post 13

1. Post a brief description (and link) to a general overview of MALDI.
MALDI stands for Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization. The purpose of the MALDI is to analyze biomolecules such as DNA and Proteins.

More specific information and more detailed use of the MALDI can be found at http://www.psrc.usm.edu/mauritz/maldi.html.

2. Post an image (3D) of the following proteins: microcystin LR, collagen, and pick another one of your favorite
proteins.

3. Post the size of each of these proteins in nanometers.
microcystin LR is about 7 nm.
Collagen is about 30 nm.
Green Fluorescent is about 400 nm.

4. Research and post a cool nano-application that involves proteins.
Nanosphere- Diagnostic testing using gold nano particles to detect low levels of proteins indicating particular diseases.

A great resource for protein is at the Protein Data Bank at: http://www.pdb.org/pdb/home/home.do
